There has recently been a lot of debate in the dental community regarding CBCT and the risk vs. benefit issue. Where can I find more information on this topic?

“While there are clinical benefits to CBCT, we recognize that there is an ongoing discussion in the dental community concerning the technology’s application and safety. We also recognize and acknowledge that there are legitimate concerns regarding radiation safety. We understand that clinicians are keenly aware of the ALARA principle with respect to any radiographic modality. The i-CAT features (used at EDI) are designed to assist dental professionals in meeting their ALARA goals while weighing the risk of exposure with the scan’s clinical benefit for the application that the clinician selects. (Our goal at EDI) is to deliver quality CBCT services and to advance education on the technology and its use.” Excerpt taken from Imaging Sciences Report 23 Nov 2010

I am curious to know what I get when I order a CBCT scan?
Is my patient’s scan reviewed by a Radiologist or am I responsible for the interpretation of the data?

It has been our mandate since CBCT was first introduced to the dental community, that every scan be read by our Oral and Maxillofacial Radiologists. This alleviates any chance of an abnormality or pathology going undetected

Every case involving a CBCT scan taken through EDI includes:
  • Radiographic interpretation by our Oral and Maxillofacial Radiologists (implant cases include measurements)
  • Hard copy digital printouts of all relevant images using our high quality, dye sublimation printer
  • Images burned to CD in the form of .pdf or .jpg files
  • Free i-CAT viewing software so you can review your patients entire scan

Have you heard of new technology whereby alginate impressions can be replaced with a CBCT scan creating a virtual study model? Can we also get stone models from a CBCT scan?

Yes! EDI works closely with some of the most innovative and advanced dental software companies today to help you make the most out of your CBCT data. Anatomodel from Anatomage, creates dynamic digital study models with optional 3D face modeling complete with a free software viewer. These digital models can be segmented as needed and they can even produce a set of stone models from the same CBCT scan, allowing you to offer impressionless study models! (for more information on this new digital model service please contact Jennifer Gray)

I want to begin offering implants in my practice but I don’t have implant planning software. How Can EDI help me get started with guided surgery without the huge investment?

At EDI we understand how costly those implant planning software programs can be. Not only the initial cost, but the training time and the time it takes to convert the data/upload it into the program only adds to the confusion. EDI works closely with several 3rd party conversion services and can easily provide you with everything you need to plan your guided implant surgery from start to finish! From the scanning appliance to the surgical guide, let us show you how easy it can be to get started. For more information contact Jennifer Gray.

I recently heard about a new technology called Medical Modeling for Orthognathic surgery. Does EDI help with this process?

Absolutely! There have been tremendous advances in the uses of medical models for all areas of Orthognathic surgery, and EDI can assist you from start to finish. From meeting with you to discuss your needs, to setting up the software, facilitating the transfer of data, and taking the scans, we can show you just how easy it is to get started with this revolutionary service. Some clinicians are using "Sure Smile" for creating custom arch wires for patients. This used to require Invisalign type impressions, but I have recently heard that i-CAT files are accepted by Sure Smile. What do you know about this? Is the resolution high enough for generating high quality models?

In October 2010, we had an additional follow up with representatives from Sure Smile and at the present time, the use of a CBCT scan for their orthodontic services is still limited to those patients without any major restorative work such as fillings or crowns as it creates too much distortion in the images to be used with their software. For those patients with minimal restorative work, EDI would be happy to facilitate the transfer of data for our Sure Smile practitioners.

If I refer a patient to EDI for a Cone Beam CT scan, do I need to send any additional x-rays?

When referring a patient to EDI for a CBCT scan, it is recommended that any additional x-rays that have already been acquired in the referring office be forwarded with the referral form, which subsequently will be sent to our Oral and Maxillofacial Radiologist for review.

“In the interest of radiation safety, we rely on the referring practitioner to direct our investigation based on images that have already been made so that way we can collimate the radiation field to reduce unnecessary radiation dose to the patient. This is of particular importance for children and adolescents. EDI does not practice screening radiology as there is no evidence-base to support this practice.”

Can my case be customized to follow the look of records done in my own office?

When ordering photographs at EDI you have various options to customize your case presentations. There are several different layouts to choose from, and each montage can be personalized with your logo. Your montage will be printed to our dye sublimation printer, providing you with top quality color images. In addition all digital data is burned to CD and included at no additional charge.

Do you have any handouts I can give to my patients?
